Female treasure has a nice ring to it no? In the 1920s, the typical African and black woman was considered a lot of things but a treasure wasn’t one of them. A life where she could just lay on a couch, dolled up in her trendy makeup- a whole ass E-Girl of the roaring 20s- is almost unimaginable. So we decided to imagine it for you.
Adorned in layers of jewelry, laid up on satin sheets, face on beat, hair is laid with her nails done… She embodies the luxuries we wish African and black women were allowed to experience both then and to an extent now too. The bulky skirt and detailed embroidery is a homage to the way black women who often embrace anything OTT from nails, hoops, hair and even their bodies are often shamed for it until it lands on Vogue or a Kardashian.
This editorial tries to imagine the black woman in the polar opposite of what the 1920s had presented her as and tries to re-imagine her in a light that is glorifying and almost ethereal.
